Magi Hubert will be telling her travel stories at the Presbyterian Church in Haines on December 17th at 7:30pm. She left New York with a one-way ticket to Moscow, and 10 months and 38 border crossings later she’s back in Haines with a collection of photos and stories to share. The Taiya Inlet Watershed Council will be showing the family friendly Wild and Scenic film festival on Thursday, December 12 at AB Hall starting at 6pm. Admission tickets will benefit projects and educational programs. Films are about nature, adventure, conservation, and indigenous cultures. That's the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in Skagway, happening December 12th, starting at 6pm at the AB Hall. Call 907-983-2426 for more information.
The crane in the Portage Cove Harbor will be down until further notice for repairs and maintenance. We hope to have it back on line by the begining of January.
As a reminder to Haines residents, the annual Cookie and Candy contest entries are due December 13th by 3 pm. Participants can drop them off at the Visitor Center. There's an open House on December 14th from noon to 3 pm, with Santa pictures from 1 to 3 pm. For more information call the Visitor Center at 766-2234.
The U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Wainwright, Department of Public Works is holding a meeting of the Restoration Advisory Board for the Former Haines Fuel Terminal, December 12th at 7pm. This meeting will include an update on environmental restoration activities at the former fuel terminal. This meeting is open to the public and Army representatives and contractors will be available to answer questions. That’s Thursday, December 12th, 7pm at the Chilkat Center. The Dahl Memorial Clinic invites the public to their Yuletide Open House Wednesday December 11th from 3 to 5pm. Food will be provided. That’s a Yuletide Open House at the clinic, December 11th at 3pm.
The public is invited to a Yuletide Ball at the Skagway Rec Center, December 14th from 8pm until midnight. Several local musicians will be featured, including Nicole Edwards and Annie Avery. A Rhythm & Blues Christmas at the Yuletide Ball, happening Saturday December 14th at the Skagway Rec Center.
Haines School will be presenting two concerts at the Chilkat Center. Grades K-6 will perform at the Chilkat on Tuesday, December 10th starting at 6:30pm; Grades 7-12 will perform at the Chilkat Center on Wednesday, December 11th starting at 6:30pm. An optional donation will be requested at the door. Food and beverages will be for sale during intermission. The public is invited to enjoy the entertainment and help support our young musicians!
