  • Up Here Magazine is hosting the 2013 Robert Service Poetry Contest. This contest is open to all, and will be published in an upcoming issue of Up Here. Entries must be received by July 1st, and reflect the style of Robert Services in 500 words or less. No more than three poems should be submitted by each entrant.   • The third annual 4th of July Music Festival in Haines is happening July 4th, from 4-11pm. Visitors from around the region are invited to enjoy six featured bands, plus special solo and ensemble performers at the Ford Seward Parade Grounds. Music will be provided for the entire family, on-site food and beverages will be available and, new this year: the Alaskan Antique Car Musher’s Show. Festival proceeds are planned to benefit a local scholarship program. The 4th of July Music Festival, starting at 4pm in Fort Seward.

  • Join the Summer Canoe Project in Haines with Wayne Price and the Chilkoot Tribal Youth Program as they create, carve and launch a dugout canoe. The Canoe Project starts Monday June 17th and will continue weekdays from 9am to 1pm at the Silver Cloud Center in Fort Seward. For youth, 18 and under.   • Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus will host its first Klukwan Summer Program on July 7-13. This week-long arts and Tlingit cultural camp takes place in Klukwan.

  • Haines Public Library invites persons of all ages to learn how to play traditional Native Youth Games. Practices are to be held in the field outside Haines Public Library every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 pm, starting June 4th, up until the July 4th competition.   • The 2013 Pat Moore Memorial Game Fish Derby will be held at Skagway's small boat harbor on June 27th - 30th. Tickets are $20/day or $45 for the weekend. Grand prize is $2,000. Proceeds go to a scholarship for a 2013 Skagway Graduate, the ALS Association, and Taiya Inlet Watershed Council educational programs in the Skagway City School. This event is conducted by the Municipality of Skagway on behalf of the Taiya Inlet Watershed Council.
