  • There will be a Haines High School Festival Concert at the Chilkat Center on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30pm. Students will showcase the music they recently presented during the Southeast Music Festival in Ketchikan.

    Also, on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30pm - the K-3 students will perform, "Yupik Song", a musical presentation, in the elementary gym.

  • The Taiya Inlet Watershed Council in Skagway is hosting a disc golf tournament and kids golf on Tuesday April 22nd at the Golf Course. Family golf starts at 4pm.   • Jeff Brown: "Masterpieces of Merriment” exhibit opens at 5-7 p.m. on April 18th at the Sheldon Museum. This exhibit features the visual puns and humor of Jeff Brown, a Juneau radio and television personality, a humorist, author, magician, artist, balloon twister, project manager and more. For approximately 40 years Jeff has entertained with his quick-wit, his balloon creations, his publications and his involvement with various community activities and events.   • The public is invited to attend A Night in India, April 19th at 6pm at the Haines School. This is a fundraising event to help five young scientists raise money for their trip to India to present their research at a science conference.   • There will be an Easter Twenty-Two and trapshoot this Saturday April 19th at the Mud Bay shooting range. For kids (up to age 16) there will be a 22 shoot from 9 until 10:30.   • Sealaska Heritage Institute is seeking K thru 12 teachers and Native artists from seven communities to participate in the institute’s Art Academy in Juneau. The teachers and artists will collaborate during the academy to create kits, which will be used to teach formline design.¬¬ The academy is scheduled for June 2nd thru 6th in Juneau and is open to applicants in Haines.   • The Skagway Arts Council is sponsoring its first *Artist in Residence Program* from April 14th-27th. Mr. Bor Che, a multimedia artist from Slovenia,  will be working with Skagway School students daily for 2 weeks on film, visual art, and poetry projects. The public is invited to meet Mr. Che on Saturday, April 19th 7:00pm at Skagway Public Library, where he will present a showing of his work and films. He will also conduct an 18th Century Bicycle Building Workshop on Saturday, April 26th (time and place TBA).   • National Library Week starts April 13th. To celebrate, there will be poetry night on Wednesday, movie night on Thursday, and more, including Fine Forgiveness. Fine Forgiveness is going on all week long, from 10am to 5pm Monday thru Friday. During this time, fines can be forgiven on any late materials.   • Southeast Alaska Guidance Association needs Alaskan Youth aged 17-20 years old to apply to be AmeriCorps Members for the Alaska Service Corps program. The season starts June 2 and runs till August 15th. Crews camp, live and work together all summer as a team. They deploy around Southeast and South-central Alaska to do valuable service projects on public lands. They camp out and stay together as a crew the entire 12 weeks of the program. Members earn $900 a month, plus there is a small food stipend. If they successfully complete the program, Members receive a federal education award. For more info call 907-789-6172.
