Staff Biographies

Scarrott first fell in love with music as a small child listening to his dad's Herb Alpert and Caterina Valente records, which led to the purchase of his first Partridge Family album. After losing fights with the coronet and guitar in grade school he turned to radio and record stores becoming a fan of a wide variety of musical styles. Then Punk Rock saved his life. As an adult he played in several bands and wasted even more time collecting used records and frequenting seedy nightclubs. At long last a lifelong obsession is being put to some constructive use.

My mom taught me never to touch her vinyl and to be good to people, in that order. So I volunteered to DJ in 2006 as soon as KHNS let me in. Now I get to do the news in a place where the ratio of dogs to people is probably higher than cell phones to people. I've written for nationwide syndicates and worldwide press in past media jobs, but I never talked to anyone who actually read or heard my news. It's good to talk to people here about things that matter to them. Every place has their thing. I'm just glad ours isn't too many people. Or traffic. Or a bad view.

I was raised in the heart of the Midwest, Lafayette, IN, where I finished an undergraduate degree in 1992. Originally from Denver, I've been in Alaska 10 years. Love the outdoors and sometimes wintering in a Mexican hacienda (a few weeks at a time). I'm training my cat to snowshoe (just kidding). She hates getting her paws cold. Love new, old, traditional, alternative, bluegrass, but especially jam band Country music. Author of Alaska Journal -- A Cyclist's Adventure Tour in SE Alaska (1993).

Georgia and her husband moved to Haines the summer of 2003, wanting to return to a rural environment again and feel like Haines is one of the most beautiful places ever. She grew up in New Jersey and then lived in Southern Maryland for over 20 years. Although working in radio is new, listening to radio is not - many commuting hours were spent with the car radio on. She enjoys many genres of music from church hymns and classical to progressive and classic rock. Favorite song is U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

Born in OH10 colony of low 4D8 1972, loves wild creatures, weird weather, great music, and most people. Dedicated to saving the world through public radio. Currently residing in a miniature castle where the wild things are with no escape plan.

Born 1956. Status: still alive. Reborn in the spring of my 48th year when I came home to Haines, Alaska for the first time. Happily married (so I am told) since before I can remember. Lover, warrior, poet, D.J.
Be Good, or Be Careful!

Self declared segue junkie. He can't listen to a song without searching for the perfect tune to follow it. His weekly Wednesday morning shows are rambling, eclectic assemblages of sound which, on a good day, fit together seamlessly. He also gets to emcee the Safety Talk, which puts him under pressure to not burn his house down carelessly.

Having spent the better part of her life making a living as an artist while listening to music (and rarely doing one without the other), she came to Haines several years ago and almost immediately began producing and hosting Sunday afternoon's World Music show, Terra Incognita. She now regularly enjoys astral traveling to various countries around the globe, and has occasionally been seen flying in between the mountain tops that surround this rare, remote haven of wild, incomparable beauty.

He arrived in Haines via a VW bus, via a Ferry, via a tow truck over a dozen years ago. He vowed to find a way to live here after attending the Haines Beer Festival where the skies were blue, the beers dark, the dogs abounded and the grateful dead filled the air. He and his lovely wife Mandy and dog Wonder are living the dream. Don't wake him, but tune in to his Sunday night Salmon Berry Jam show.

I carry in my frontal cortex a parade of memories from my 25 years of playing with KHNS. However, I've been advised by Homeland Security not to disclose any of them. What I can tell you is that KHNS is a remarkable resource for our Lynn Canal communities and that I am pleased to be a part of all that. I've DJ'ed every program on the roster and am currently hosting Thursday morning Sound Waves. Very few reasonable humans lay claim to being frontier rhetoricians, but I will confess to my obsession with wild places and the manner in which people interact with each other about the fate of frontier land. That's why Haines is such an exciting place to study. And that's part of the reason that I need KHNS for a nonrhetorical distraction. Here's to another 25 years of fiddling at the control board!

Heavily influenced by the Purple People Eater found in a basement stack of 45s sometime mid-childhood. Now loves paroozing the album stacks at KHNS searching for obscure great songs that somehow slipped through the cracks, hoping someone out there will tap their toe when played on air. Also loves old things, wild things, the smell of spring and singing along.

Chuck grew up listening to 70's AM Radio and never recuperated. He started scratching at the young age of 3 with his new plastic record player and a stack of Peter Pan 45s. That was just the beginning of a great vinyl love affair. His next gig came at Moonlight Rock-n-Bowl which ended soon after he was told the DJ picks up bowling balls and empty beers. After years in back room bars spinning between punk bands and the infamous Christmas party where he hijacked the DJ Booth (it was 1 disc on random!) he finds himself in beautiful Haines Alaska. While sorting donated albums and meeting great friends at KHNS he envisions a return to the turntables and electric vinyl glory that only a record collection of this mass can offer.
